Cowboys Owner Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Inadvertent’ Offensive Signal toward Spectators

The NFL has imposed a substantial $250,000 fine on Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for what he describes as an “inadvertent” offensive hand signal made toward fans during a Sunday’s contest at MetLife Stadium.

Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones flashing his middle finger toward opposing supporters, though he maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters present at the game as his team secured a decisive win.

“That was regrettable. That was kind of an interaction with our fans out in front of us,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, our fans. The entire stadium was filled with excitement for the Dallas team.”

He further clarified that the gesture was completely accidental, happening amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I just showed the wrong finger,” he remarked. “The action was accidentally performed. I’m not kidding. Should you call it accidental, you can. However, it got corrected rapidly.”

League Precedent for Proprietor Penalties

This incident isn’t the first time an NFL owner has been fined for misconduct. Recent examples include:

  • Carolina Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at fans in early 2024.
  • Former Titans proprietor Adams received a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.

Jones, a figure who is known for his media savvy, reportedly has an estimated wealth of around $16bn, so the fine manageable for the billionaire owner.

Offseason Issues and Media Attention

The incident follows a contentious preseason for Jones, who faced widespread criticism from the Dallas supporters after the team traded key defensive player Parsons to the Packers.

Additionally, Jones was a central figure in a Netflix documentary that explored his role in developing the Cowboys into the world’s highest-worth sports franchise, even with its recent title shortcomings.

The league’s decision to fine Jones underscores its ongoing initiative to uphold professional conduct among all team officials, irrespective of their position or financial standing.
